City Note 03

BENGALURU

A reading-life note for Bengaluru: mapped slowly, checked carefully, updated as public records improve.

Overview

The note

Bengaluru’s reading culture is distributed across Vasanth Nagar, Indiranagar, Church Street, Cubbon Park, and several university campuses. It is less institutionally legacy-bound than Delhi or Mumbai, and more reader-organized: silent reading circles like Cubbon Reads, bookstore-anchored communities at Champaca and Atta Galatta, and a literature festival run largely on civic energy.

Church Street is the city’s symbolic literary corridor, but it is not the whole story. Treating it as such would understate Bengaluru’s campus societies, library culture, and Kannada-language publishing, which remain comparatively undocumented in this first pass.
