Kolkata’s reading life is anchored by scale rather than scarcity: the International Kolkata Book Fair remains one of the largest public book events in the world, College Street is a historic book-market district in its own right, and Bengali-language publishers like Ananda and Dey’s continue to operate as major civic institutions, not boutique imprints.
This is a city where reading culture still operates publicly and at volume, resisting the more romantic, nostalgia-led shorthand often applied to it.
