Overview
The note
Lucknow’s reading culture is smaller and slower than Delhi’s or Mumbai’s, but no less real. Hazratganj has long been the city’s bookselling street, anchored for decades by Ram Advani Booksellers before its 2016 closure, and now carried forward by fourth-generation booksellers like Universal Booksellers.
Lucknow should not be measured against Delhi, Bengaluru, or Kolkata’s scale. Its value lies in public library memory, the Amir-ud-Daula Public Library and University of Lucknow’s Tagore Library, and a civic-literary continuity that runs back through Munshi Naval Kishore’s 19th-century publishing house.
