City Note 02

MUMBAI

A reading-life note for Mumbai: mapped slowly, checked carefully, updated as public records improve.

Overview

The note

Mumbai’s literary geography runs through Fort, Bandra, and Kala Ghoda: heritage institutions like the Asiatic Society and David Sassoon Library sit minutes from independent bookstores like Kitab Khana, Title Waves, and Trilogy. The city’s reading culture leans social and event-facing: author talks, museum programming, and reading-group meetups in public parks are as central to it as any single bookstore.

It would be a mistake to reduce Mumbai’s literary life to festival glamour or celebrity publishing. The more durable infrastructure is institutional: subscription libraries that have run continuously for over a century, and reading rooms that predate the city’s current bookstore boom.
